Sexual Crime Information
Sexual assault statistics
In 2008, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation stated there were 10,096 registered sex offenders in Colorado and, no doubt, many offenders who have not yet been caught. One in four women and one in 17 men in Colorado have experienced a complete or attempted sexual assault in their lifetime.

There are no perfect sexual assault protection strategies, and there is no way to predict all possible situations. However, you can learn more about how to protect yourself and your children against sex crimes. The Bureau of Investigation's website contains good informational facts and resources.

If you have questions or would like additional information on sex offenders, call 303-663-6100.

Sex offender awareness
Most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows: strangers aren’t the biggest threat. Up to 90 percent of sex offenders are known to their victims and include relatives, friends and authority figures. Some steps you can take to prevent sex assaults:
  • If you feel uncomfortable in someone’s presence, trust your feelings, and take steps to distance yourself. Don’t be afraid to make a scene if necessary.
  • Be observant and aware of your surroundings; avoid poorly-lit areas where an attacker might hide.
  • Be careful if using alcohol or drugs -- you are more vulnerable when intoxicated.
  • Do not leave food or beverages unattended at a party or in a public place.
  • Do not pick up hitchhikers or stop to help a stranger in a stalled vehicle. Instead, use a phone in a safe location to call for help.
  • Be cautious about making contact with those you meet on the Internet or via other similar situations.
  • Don’t be embarrassed to use security staff to walk you to your car at work, school or when shopping.
