The Town Clerk on Monday determined there are enough valid signatures for the recall effort in Castle Rock’s District 5 to move forward.
The Town’s Charter allows a petition to be circulated in attempt to recall a Town Councilmember within a certain timeframe. A group of petitioners have done so in an effort to recall District 5 Councilmember Renee Valentine.
The petitioners needed a minimum of 268 valid signatures; the Town Clerk has validated 273 signatures. The required number of signatures is defined in the Town Charter as 25 percent of the number of votes cast within the district the last time a Councilmember from that district was elected.
Next, there is a protest period in which a registered Castle Rock voter could dispute the petition. The deadline for filing the protest is May 24. After May 24 and absent a successful protest of the petition, the question regarding the recall of Councilmember Valentine will be added to the Nov. 8 general election ballot for those voters in District 5.
It’s important to note Valentine will continue to serve in office while this process takes place.
Valentine was first elected in 2011. Her term will expire in November 2018.
